Russia deplores US rights record - Gayo Lues

Russia has censured the United States for its human rights violations and underlined the American hypocrisy in Washington’s lecturing other countries on the matter.

“The situation in the United States is a far cry from the ideals that Washington proclaims,” a 90-page report from Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, discussing the American human rights abuses in a lengthy section of 20 pages.

It had allotted five pages to the Western military alliance NATO’s military action on Libya, which, according to Libyan officials, claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians.

The account also criticized the US for running a ‘notorious’ prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and condemned the country’s President Barack Obama for “legalizing indefinite and extrajudicial custody and the return of court martials.”

It further blamed Washington for interfering in the US citizens’ personal lives and violating the rights of Muslim Americans under the pretext of its so-called ‘war on terror.’

In a vitriolic assertion, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said earlier in the month that the United States intended to dominate other countries, adding that the world was sick and tired of taking orders from Washington. “Sometimes it seems to me that America does not need allies, it needs vassals,” he said.

The report likewise led a broadside against European states, Canada, and Georgia on the countries’ rights records.
