At least five EU presidents are boycotting an upcoming summit in Ukraine amid growing concerns over alleged mistreatment of the jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

A foreign ministry spokesman said on Monday that the presidents of Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Slovenia had informed Kiev they would not attend the Yalta meeting of Central and Eastern European leaders on May 11-12.

“We’re announcing it beforehand, so that nobody makes any sensation out of it. There is no reason for seeing a [diplomatic] protest behind it,” spokesman Oleg Voloshin said.

Ukraine described the European powers’ threats a return to Cold War tactics.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has also boycotted the meeting over the hunger striking opposition leader and her claims of being beaten by jail guards.

The former premier was sentenced in October to seven years for abusing power while she was in office. She has denied the allegations.

On Friday, images appeared showing bruises on Tymoshenko body, prompting thousands of her supporters to march through the capital Kiev.
