The US-Afghan agreement to set up a permanent base in Afghanistan will not be beneficial to the Afghan government and nation. It will be detrimental to the US and the region.”
Spokesman for the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Kazem Jalali
“The US-Afghan agreement to set up a permanent base in Afghanistan will not be beneficial to the Afghan government and nation. It will be detrimental to the US and the region,” spokesman for the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Kazem Jalali told reporters on Monday.
He added that Afghanistan should make use of Iraq’s successful experience and must see foreign forces leave the country.
The Iranian lawmaker emphasized that the Afghan people are not interested in the presence of US troops in their country.
US President Barack Obama and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai signed the Strategic Partnership Agreement in Kabul on May 1, which extends the US presence in Afghanistan to another decade beyond 2014.
The US-led troops have been present in Afghanistan since 2001. Their initial offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country despite the presence of about 130,000 foreign forces.
