Gunmen have killed at least eleven people and injured eight others in a drug rehabilitation clinic in northern Mexico, police say.

State police said the Monday assault took place on the outskirts of Torreon, an industrial city in the border state of Coahuila.

In June last year, 13 people were killed at a rehab center in the same city.

Gang members sometimes seek shelter at rehabilitation centers, making other patients targets of drug cartels.

Coahuila has experienced rampant violence fueled by a turf war between drug gangs fighting for control of smuggling routes into the United States.

Drug wars in Mexico have claimed 55,000 lives and more than 5000 gone missing since 2006 when President Felipe Calderon launched a crackdown on criminal gangs.

Last Month, the bodies of 43 men and 6 women, some of them mutilated, were found in plastic bags on a highway connecting the northern metropolis of Monterrey to the US border.
