The trial of the Norwegian mass murderer, Anders Behring Breivik, entered its final phase as the prosecutors declared him insane in their closing statement.

Prosecutors Inga Bejer Engh and Svein Holden announced on Thursday that there were still doubts regarding Breivik’s insanity, but he should be placed in psychiatric care instead of a prison.

The final verdict of the court in Oslo is due to be announced in July or August.

If the court comes to the same conclusion as the prosecutors, it would mean that Breivik will avoid criminal responsibility for his actions.

This is while the Norwegian terrorist dismissed the findings of a previous psychiatric evaluation of him as “ill-willed fabrications,” saying he wanted to be found sane and accountable for his actions so that his anti-Islam ideology will be taken seriously.

“These are ill-willed fabrications. It is not me who is described in that report,” Breivik said, referring to the report that categorized him as a paranoid schizophrenic.

Breivik, 33, faces terrorism and premeditated murder charges for detonating a bomb in the center of the Norwegian capital and a shooting spree at the governing Labor Party’s annual youth camp on Utoya Island on July 22, 2011. Eight people died in Oslo and 69 were killed on the island.

The anti-Muslim extremist has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he acted in defense. He claimed himself to be a crusader and his attacks a political act designed to prevent what he described as a “Muslim invasion” of Europe.

The July 2011 incident was Norway’s worst peacetime massacre since World War II.
