Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has announced that a new fleet of surface and submarine vessels will soon join the Iranian Navy.

Saying that the naval forces of the Islamic Republic have escorted 1,500 commercial ships and oil tankers in recent years, Admiral Sayyari emphasized in an interview with Fars News Agency on Saturday that Iran has established security and protection for its commercial vessels and oil tankers in the international waters.

“Nowadays, sea piracy has turned into terrorism and those that benefit from such [terror] acts are providing support for sea pirates,” said Sayyari, noting that the establishment of security for Iranian commercial fleets in the international waters is among the duties of Iran’s Navy.

The navy commander, however, underlined that the Iranian naval presence in trans-regional waters, such as the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, is not merely to confront sea pirates but also to convey a message of peace and friendship to other nations by hoisting the flag of the Islamic Republic in the international waters.

He further stated that the navy also intends to display the scientific and industrial capabilities of the Iranian nation to other countries by maintaining naval presence at the international level.

We want the world to know that despite all the sanction against our country, we are the top producer of vessel units, and our naval equipments are manufactured indigenously, he stated.
