100 Italian newspapers facing closure - Gayo Lues

More than 100 newspapers in Italy are facing closure because of the government’s subsidy cuts, Press TV reports.

The newspapers are threatened with closure because Prime Minister Mario Monti‘s government has decided to halt subsidies in 2012 as part of its austerity policies.

The cuts were originally ordered by the previous government of Silvio Berlusconi.

Rencho Sanchelli, the representative of the National Federation of the Italian Press (FNSI), made a statement late on Tuesday in which he said that over 4000 press jobs are threatened as more than 100 daily, weekly, and monthly newspapers are facing imminent closure/bankruptcy.

The FNSI is now demanding that the Italian government abolish state budgeting of the press in exchange for a percentage of advertising profits as well as a percentage bonus from Italian banks.

Many Italians now regard the subsidies as a waste of taxpayers’ money to support the newspaper industry at a time when the country is experiencing serious economic problems.

Italy faces a nearly two-trillion-euro debt that is 120 percent of its gross domestic product. A 60-billion-euro austerity package to balance the budget by 2013 was approved in August.
