We will do our best to determine the fate of the [Iranian] aid workers.”
Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Iran Peter Ritter
At a Wednesday meeting with Head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Abolhassan Faqih in the Iranian capital city, Ritter pointed to the ICRC’s continued efforts to pursue the fate of the seven abducted IRCS members in Libya, adding, “We will do our best to clarify the fate of the aid workers.”
The Libyan Red Crescent (LRC) said in a statement on Tuesday that unidentified gunmen kidnapped a seven-member IRCS delegation after they left the headquarters of the LRC in Benghazi.
Ritter pointed to the dire situation caused by armed men for humanitarian workers in Libya over the past two months, noting that the ICRC office in Libya is in collaboration with the LRC to communicate with the Libyan militias to discuss ways for the release of the seven Iranian abductees.
Faqih, for his part, called for a joint statement condemning the abduction in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of violence against the kidnapped delegation in the future.
He also called on the ICRC to dispatch a delegation to Libya to negotiate with the armed groups and facilitate contact between the abductees and their families.
The Iranian delegation went to Libya at the invitation of the LRC to discuss various prospects for cooperation in the field of humanitarian assistance.
