At least three groups of Canada’s aboriginal community have seriously opposed the pipeline project which they consider to be impinging upon their health, security and environment.
A large number of environmentalist groups, worried about and seriously critical of Canada’s decision to exit the Kyoto Protocol, are in total agreement with the views of the aboriginal community and sympathize with them in getting their message of discontent through to Canadian authorities.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has prioritized the construction of this pipeline as one of his ambitious objectives regardless of people’s demands, environmental considerations and aboriginal residents.
The pipeline is part of Harper’s plans to diversify Canada’s markets at a time the United States is the only buyer of Canadian oil at reduced prices.
In a bid to win popularity for the project, Canadian security officials have been empowered by the government to consider any public opposition to the project as sabotage and terrorist operations and to firmly confront them.
