‘Israel couldn’t rebottle Iran war genie’ - Gayo Lues

Iran’s nuclear energy program is red herring cover. It’s used as pretext to replace an independent state with a subservient pro-Western one. It’s also about furthering Israeli regional dominance.”

Stephen Lendman, political columnist

A political analyst says an Israeli military offensive against Iran is “madness” as it will unleash a genie that “cannot be rebottled.”

In an article published on the Press TV website, Stephen Lendman said an Israeli war on Iran is “all loss, no gain, and potential catastrophic consequences if things spin out of control,” adding, “This genie can’t be rebottled if unleashed.”

“Israel will be gravely affected if the plans [to attack Iran] are implemented. Why else would most Israelis oppose war and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for threatening to do so?”

A recent poll conducted on Jewish Israelis suggested that 61 percent of those questioned oppose an Israeli strike, compared to 27 percent in favor.

Tel Aviv has repeatedly threatened Iran with a military strike, alleging Tehran’s nuclear energy program may be militarized.

On August 9, Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Ehud Barak said, “We are determined to prevent Iran from becoming nuclear and all the options are on the table. When we say it, we mean it.”

A day later, Israeli Labor Party leader Shelly Yechimovich described as worrisome the reports coming from the offices of prime minister and minister for military affairs about Iran.

Iranian officials have promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.

Tehran also refutes the allegations over its nuclear energy program, saying that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency it has every right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

“Iran’s nuclear energy program is red herring cover. It’s used as pretext to replace an independent state with a subservient pro-Western one. It’s also about furthering Israeli regional dominance,” Lendman said.

He added that growing resistance among the Israelis, through petitions and protests, against an attack on Iran can be “a good sign.”

“Hopefully it’s a good sign. It better be in dealing with sociopaths impersonating leaders. Netanyahu and Barak are two of the worst. No one’s safe with them in charge,” Lendman said.

“If Israel strikes, Netanyahu’s waging the last war. Iranian generals learned from [executed Iraqi dictator] Saddam’s mistakes. Even with ‘new tricks’ up his sleeve, Netanyahu doesn’t know his adversary, its defenses, its structure, and overall preparedness to hit back hard.”
