Norway court to deliver Breivik verdict - Gayo Lues

The 33-year-old is charged with voluntary homicide and committing acts of terror as he detonated a bomb in the center of the capital, Oslo, and went on a shooting spree at the governing Labor Party’s annual youth camp on Utoya Island on July 22, 2011.

Eight people died in Oslo and 69, mostly teenagers, were killed on the island.

The panel of five judges will rule later on Friday whether Breivik will be sent to prison or hospitalized in a psychiatric ward over insanity claims.

If the court concludes that the far-right extremist was sane, he would serve a maximum of 21 years in prison, otherwise he would be kept in a mental hospital for as long as he is considered a threat to society.

Breivik himself insisted that he is sane and refused to plead guilty by saying that he wanted to be found accountable for his actions so that his anti-Islam ideology will be taken seriously.

He will give evidence at the court about his motives for carrying out Europe’s deadliest rampage in history.
