Kirchner never had thyroid cancer - Gayo Lues

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has never had cancer, despite the initial diagnosis that resulted in the removal of her thyroid.

The Argentine leader was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just after Christmas and underwent an operation on January 4.

But the analysis of Kirchner’s removed thyroid gland proved that it had never contained cancerous cells, government spokesman Alfredo Scoccimaro said on Saturday.

“The original diagnosis has been modified,” Scoccimaro told reporters at a press conference. “The presence of cancer cells was discarded.”

The Argentine president has taken a medical leave until January 24 and has transferred her powers to Vice President Amado Boudou.

Kirchner’s medical team “considers that the surgical treatment undertaken is sufficient and the administration of radioactive iodine is no longer necessary,” he added.

Several hundred supporters camped out near the hospital where she was treated, carrying banners reading, “Strength Cristina.”

She is currently recovering at her official residence in a suburb of Buenos Aires.
