Third survivor freed from Italian ship - Gayo Lues

A helicopter evacuates the Costa Concordia‘s crew member on January 15, 2012.
Emergency workers say they have rescued a third survivor on the stricken Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, 36 hours after it ran aground while carrying more than 4,200 people.

The Italian crew member with a suspected broken leg was airlifted to the mainland by firefighters from the ship on Sunday.

On Saturday, a South Korean couple on their honeymoon were rescued when firefighters in the unnumbered part of the ship heard their screams.

Three passengers of the cruise ship that ran aground while operating in the Mediterranean Sea on late Friday have so far been confirmed dead and about 40 are still missing.

The Costa Concordia, a 290-meter Italian cruise ship, was carrying approximately 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members when it hit a reef and started taking on water.

Francesco Schettino, Captain of the Costa Concordia, has been arrested on suspicion of causing the accident. The vessel’s First Officer has also been detained.

An Italian prosecutor also confirmed allegations by the passengers and the crew about the captain abandoning the stricken ship before all the passengers had left.

Reports indicate that at least another 30 passengers have been injured and some of them are in critical condition.

The vessel had set sail from the port of Civitavecchia near Rome and was on its way to Palermo. Divers are continuing to search the ship, which is lying on its side near the Tuscan island of Giglio.
