Italian Taxi drivers on strike over cuts - Gayo Lues

Italian Taxi and truck drivers have staged a nationwide strike to protest government reforms aimed to shrink the country’s debt by opening the job market to more competition.

Thousands of miles of Italian roads were crippled Monday with truckers blocking access to much of the Italy’s highways, while Taxi drivers parked their cars from Milan to Bari to protest a government plan to increase the number of taxi licenses.

The strike comes a week after the Italian cabinet approved a law that deregulates some service sectors aimed at boosting growth.

Rome says the measure is needed to create jobs, increase competition and cut costs in the eurozone‘s third largest economy with world’s fourth largest debt.

But drivers argue that the deregulation plan and rising fuel prices will cause serious harm to their livelihoods and will lead to more poverty.

Truckers, who are on strike against rising fuel price and toll prices say they plan to stay on roads until Friday to remind authorities of the gravity of the crisis.

Fuel prices in Italy have reached new record highs over tax hikes introduced in the austerity budget.

The worsening debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, triggering incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.
