Fire kills 26 at rehab center in Peru - Gayo Lues

Police officers are seen at a rehabilitation center in Lima’s San Juan de Lurigancho district, after a fire blazing in the compound was put out, January 28, 2012.
A fire at a drug rehabilitation center in the Peruvian capital, Lima, has left at least 26 people dead and over 10 firefighters injured.

The blaze occurred on Saturday at an unlicensed rehab center in the capital’s densely populated and impoverished San Juan de Lurigancho district.

Fire Department commandant Antonio Zavala said the high death toll came because the iron doors to the center were locked, which prevented many residents from escaping.

Locals said there were around 50 patients locked inside the crowded center, and that several of the patients died of burns or suffocation.

Fourteen occupants were taken to nearby hospitals, where four of them died of severe injuries.

The disaster apparently arose from a brawl between patients who set a mattress on fire.
