After days of extremely low temperatures in the Ukraine, at least 30 people have lost their lives due to hypothermia.

According to the country’s emergencies ministry, most of the victims were homeless and froze to death on the streets, while four of the victims died in their homes.

This is while another 500 people have been transferred to hospitals to receive treatment for frostbite and other cold-related ailments.

Authorities have opened more than 1,500 shelters across the country, offering food and heat to the homeless.

Another 150 shelters are to be established, as temperatures continue to drop.

The severe weather has also prompted the country’s education ministry to close more than 3,000 schools.

Ukraine has been experiencing one of its coldest winters with temperatures down to minus 28 degrees Celsius (minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit) in some regions.
