A court in Turin sentenced Stephan Schidheiny and Jean-Louis de Cartier, respectively former owner and top shareholder in absentia on Monday for failing to comply with safety rules at building firm Eternit.
Prosecutors said the two men were failed to take measures to stop asbestos fibers left over from production of roof coverings and pipes from spreading across the region.
“This is the biggest trial in the world and in history as far as safety at work is concerned,” prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello said.
The lack of safety measures led to the deaths or illnesses of Eternit workers and residents over the past four decades. Overall, more than 6,000 people were seeking damages in the case.
During the trial, which has stretched on since December 2009, some 2,100 deaths or illnesses were blamed on the asbestos fibers, which can cause grave lung problems, including cancer.
Asbestos were popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century for their sound absorption and resistance to fire, heat and electrical damage.
