A report has revealed that the inmates died in a prison fire in Honduras had been locked inside an overcrowded jail where most prisoners had never been charged.

A Honduran government report obtained by AP on Thursday said that over half of the 856 inmates of the Comayagua prison were either awaiting trial or being held as suspected gang members.

An inmate started a fire through the prison Tuesday night. The deadly inferno was burning and suffocating screaming men in their locked cells as rescuers desperately searched for keys.

According to officials, 358 people are confirmed dead in the world’s deadliest prison fire in a century.

The government report also said that on any given day there were about 800 inmates in a facility built for 500.

Meanwhile, President Porfirio Lobo suspended top prison officials, including the corrections chief, as well as those at the Comayagua penitentiary.

On Thursday morning, officials continued their investigation at the prison.
