Clashes have erupted in Athens between riot police and demonstrators protesting against the Greek government’s austerity measures.

Students took to the streets in protest against spending cuts the government says are needed for the country’s struggling economy.

Greek students have been protesting spending cuts in education, which have largely affected schools.

Before the clashes, workers gathered outside the Labor Ministry building to protest against the closing of governmental organizations

The EU and the IMF say adopting such measures is essential to securing the 130-billion-euro bailout package that will save Athens from a debt default in March.

Despite the austerity cuts and the bailout funds, reports indicate that Greece has been in a recession for five consecutive years.

Greece has been the scene of protests and demonstrations since the austerity cuts were first implemented in early 2011. Many of the rallies have turned violent, leaving scores of the protesters injured.
