The city’s public safety secretary said in a statement on Sunday that the tourists weren’t injured in the Thursday night attack although their possessions were seized at gunpoint.
The statement said a group of hooded attackers intercepted the tourists, who were traveling by bus, while they were passing through El Nogalito town, located 650 kilometers (404 miles) west of the capital Mexico City. The 22 unlucky passengers were heading back to the 3,000-plus Carnival Splendor cruise ship.
“Carnival is working with guests to reimburse them for lost valuables and assist with lost passports or other forms of identification,” Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement.
The nationalities of the robbed tourists have not been disclosed, and the robbers have yet to be apprehended.
The robbery comes two weeks after the US State Department issued a travel warning about travel to Mexico due to the high number of violence and killings taking place in several Mexican states.
More than 47,500 people were killed in drug-related violence in Mexico between December 2006 and September 2011, according to the US State Department, which reminds its citizens that although most of those murdered were involved in criminal activity, innocent people were also caught in the crossfire.
