Polling stations across El Salvador opened at 07:00 am local time (13:00 GMT) on Sunday and voting is expected to continue until 05:00 pm (23:00 GMT).
The South American country has a multi-party system, in which the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) and the left-wing Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) dominate the Legislative Assembly with respectively 32 and 35 seats.
Both the country’s president and vice president are members of the FMLN. However, recent opinion polls suggest that ARENA has gained ground.
El Salvador experienced the civil war between 1980 and 1992.
